That just a city – just one small city
could put hope back inside of me
could ensure a constant distance
of 150 miles from my family

It is just a city – I know this much
with its cobbles and its streets
slabs and cracks and concrete
much the same as this one, in essence

But in heart and in future
in bleeding heart and distant future
I see finished projects and mornings seen
poems that go beyond half rhymes
and paper beyond sketches and bins

Disappear here

It is just a city – just a city
with its lights and its coastline
its underground apartments
that I thought could be mine
just a city, with its rhythm and colour
one I never saw again in another
and I did look – believe me

It is just a city, with its flowers
and pavilion, a warm welcome
five hundred bars and morning gulls
it’s just a city –
but it’s the first one I’ve made a home
